Neurodiversity, the natural variation in human neurocognitive functioning (Chapman, 2020), is reshaping the field. Yet social emotional learning frameworks and pragmatic intervention traditions used by speech-language pathologists continue to center neurotypical norms as the implicit standard (Huijg, 2020; Wagland et al., 2025). Research and lived experience tell us that hiding neurodivergent traits, also known as masking/camouflaging, is linked to anxiety, depression, and loss of authenticity (Cage & Troxell-Whitman, 2019; Cook et al., 2021) and many perceived social impairments are actually rooted in bilateral misunderstanding and natural differences in communication (Gates et al., 2023; Milton, 2012). This session offers busy clinicians approachable, actionable strategies to recenter intervention around autonomous communication, self-advocacy, and authentic connection across ages, settings, and neurotypes.
